Spent most of August painting every spare minute. It was a treat for HEB and me to meet friends for lunch at Beggars before MSU vs Eastern at Spartan stadium.

here we are taking a break from a great conversation.

During the game we had a suprise when old friend BNB, son and Brother-in-law met us in the north endzone.

We endured the cool overcast and occasional rain showers and had a nice Father/Daughter day.

off to the Oaks Theater in Olivet to see the drumline and jazz ensemble.

April 7, 2006

out of the blue, E called and invited me to dinner. I drank minted rum and nibbled on crisp, deep-fried portabello strips dipped in horseradish sauce. During dinner I talked E into shivering through a few innings of the Lugnuts. Got a souvenir out of the deal but had to warm up fast.. Moriarty's was toasty and E knew the band.. the Lash. Lots of laughs and a few new friends...

Images and comments from the annual Columbus, Ohio road trip. this year: legendary jazz bassist, Dave Holland at the Wexner Center. Previous trips - Wayne Shorter, Charles Lloyd and Jack Dejohnette.

big mosque near Akron..you've probably seen it

our hotel in the artsy "short north" district...odd architecture of the civic center partially visible. We shared an elevator with tenor saxophonist Chris Potter and saw Dave Holland at breakfast.

The gourmet, north market where we stock up on supplies...designer beer, meatloaf sandwiches, and peppered chocolate.

D and J trying not to look guilty after deep fried sourkraut balls...

They said absolutely no photography or instant expulsion. So naturally I took some photos. We sit in the front row and marvel at the virtouso performances

Me, D and M after the show... on to the blues station where a local blues trio tore it up. The front man had the audience cheering when he climbed onto the lap of a large, black woman.

My trip to Hockey Town with B to see the redwings...

for old times sake, the grungy bar next to St. Andrews...

The bartender pours us shots of root beer schnapps after we put out our cigars without a fuss.

Some of the colorful characters we ran into... she's from our home town.

The banners in the rafters at Joe Louis

The redwings defeat the listless team from san jose, 4 zip.

Birthday...an old man's dreams are a young man's dreams....

January 11, 2006

swung by our old house in Westland during a business trip to the Detroit area. Looks about the same except the huge sick elms and shedding pine are gone. Don't blame them a bit...those were my pre-garage home ownership days. Three bedrooms one and a half baths.

January 9, 2006

Since M is broke and contemplating his future moves, I have been putting him to work with very pleasing results. We reworked the lighting in the basement studio among other things. This is where I give guitar lessons, chart tunes, rehearse and hang paintings in various stages of completion.

December 9, 2005

Dauntless travelers M and J, from merry olde England, plan their march through the american south over a hasty meal of butter squash, pepinos, cumquats, pasta, roast beef and cider. They are rumoured to be traveling in a late model sedan with a shot battery.

December 2, 2005

ventured onto the campus of olivet college and watched the olivet college jazz ensemble concert under the direction of JG.

We regretfully inform friends of brianfburke.com of the passing of Nala, free spirit and loving companion. We testify truthfully that we coaxed a purr from her on a daily basis, a ritual enjoyed by coaxer and coaxee. She will spend eternity beneath her favorite shady perch.

...The past seldom obliges by revealing to us when wildness will break out in the future. Wars, depressions, stock-market booms and crashes, and ethnic massacres come and go, but they always seem to arrive as surprises. After the fact, however, when we study the history of what happened, the source of the wildness appears to be so obvious to us that we have a hard time understanding how people on the scene were oblivious to what lay in wait for them...Peter L. Bernstein, Against the Gods

The skies return the prodigal, who resumes his corny life...

Welcome Home, MRB!

He will be joining his crude... american... banjo-plucking family around the plastic, TV table for a day or so and then...off again, in search of new adventures.
